When you go on vacation you want to get away from the noise and busy everyday life However finding the perfect place can be tough In this weeks journey on a tank of gas Brad Feldman heads to the small town of Riverdale It s an issue facing many small towns When the school closes the town is left with a large empty building With each year that passes the building begins to fade away This has been happening in Riverdale since 1994 But luckily a family with a plan came in to the rescue Cole Bertsch Riverdale High Lodge You know this is really one of North Dakotas hidden gems Cole and his dad Lee Bertsch bought the former Riverdale Grade and High School They are in the process of converting the old classrooms into hotel rooms When you come here you can still shoot baskets in the gym Cole Bertsch Riverdale High Lodge They used it as a community center and that is what it was used for and the kids wrote save our gym Dont tear down the gym And you know we came into town and if we didn t do that the school would be torn down However this is not all the Bertsch s decided to save You can still sing the school song look back on the great moments whether it is academics or the many Riverdale Knights sports accomplishments Cole Bertsch Riverdale High Lodge I tell you what the community is excellent The community has brought in old jersies cheerleading outfits Football uniforms I mean you name it track uniforms letterman jackets We have all of that we are going to incorporate it in the main dining room when we get that going The former cafeteria is not serving up your typical school lunches anymore rather it has been turned into the Knights Bar and Grill Cole Bertsch Riverdale High Lodge We ve had a lot of people say it feels weird drinking in the school that I went to You know x amount of years ago I was going to school here and now I am drinking here This school closed for the last fourteen years is now back in session And for once it ll be the place you want to be during the summer In Riverdale Brad Feldman KX News Bertsch hopes they can have some of the rooms ready by the end of August
